I do not think anybody should exist on this Planet Earth without reading and rereading this classic love tale “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen. There exists a novel “Love Story” by Eric Segal but there is only one Love Tale for me “Pride and Prejudice”. It is a classic tale of middle class family with five daughters and their parents. I read this book first time when I was in seventh standard and like my whole perspective changed. I have been in love with the characters of Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy then on wards and I will continue to do so till my death. I have reread this book multiple times.
Jane Austen has very nicely depicted the struggle of lead pair Elizabeth and Mr.Darcy succinctly. At times you really strike a chord with both of them. Usually pride is associated with men and prejudices with women but nowadays I do not think this is true anymore. I have seen several examples where pride is shown by women and even men have their prejudices about lot of things.
If one is callous one would just say that Elizabeth is a gold digger and exploited and manipulated Mr. Darcy to her own and her family’s advantage. But we may never accept such theory. Pride and Prejudice is fairy tale with a very sweet ending and how one could critically dissect it and mar the loving image of our dear Elizabeth.
I am 100% convinced that there exists only one Mr.Darcy and he exists in this novel only. Throughout the book I liked that scene very much in which Mr. Darcy proposes Ms.Elizabeth. The struggle he goes through , his feelings before and after proposal is indelibly marked. You know you really feel for him in that moment and it is such unforgettable moment when you are most vulnerable and exposing your love to your beloved. What happens afterwards is another take on the story but for me this moment is the most memorable one.
I have read all the works of Jane Austen after reading this book namely Emma,Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, Mansfield Park but I kept on searching Mr.Darcy in these books and once you have the taste of Pride and Prejudice everything else will be pale in comparison.
I have seen all the movies of this classic tale “Pride and Prejudice” . There have been several adaptations:
1) Pride and Prejudice – 1940 starring Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson – It was OK
2) Bride and Prejudice – 2004 starring Aishwarya Bacchan – This movie totally destroyed the spirit of Novel
3) Pride and Prejudice – 2005 Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen – Keira was lively but Matthew was shown as weak character.
But the best TV series that captured this classic tale is Pride and Prejudice (1995 TV series) starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle
Sometimes you wonder whether movies or TV Series can do justice to the book but I assure you this TV Series did full justice to this book. Before seeing this TV Series I did not know who was Colin Firth but he became indelibly marked in my head after seeing him as Mr.Darcy. He is very good actor and I have seen many of his good works but for me he will always be Mr.Darcy. If you have not seen this you should see this BBC TV Series. Colin Firth gives full credence to his role as Mr. Darcy and he really makes your heart beat wildly and then you definitely feel love for this character.
You must watch the dilemma of Colin Firth in this BBC Series as well.
So gist of the story is you should and must keep copy of this Jane Austen novel in your library. There have been other writers like Georgette Heyer who followed Jane Austen style but there is only one book which cannot be imitated that is “Pride and Prejudice”
I will end with this classic quote from the novel
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife
This is so true in today’s era also with a twist. I will rephrase it like this
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man/single woman in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife/husband
